To give the viewer an idea of where the subject of the map is, designers often like to add an inset map which shows the greater area. This gives the viewer the opportunity to focus on the specific location mentioned in the story, as well as familiarize themselves with the general location.XPression Maps Designers can now choose any Maps Style they have created and use it in the new XPression Maps Inset Drawing Tool “Insert”.

Shadows give the illusion of elevation, light source, and position. Designers have used shadows to raise awareness of items on the screen, including regions on a map. Now, XPression Maps allows the designer to add shadows to an XPression Maps Shape Style, to allow for consistent shapes and shadows in the maps they make, as well as the template-based maps the newsroom users create with the XPression Maps HTML5 client for the XPression MOS workflow.

Accuracy is as important as style when it comes to making maps. In XPression Maps, markers can be added to Text Objects to properly identify the Longitude and latitude of a location on the map. Unfortunately, there are situations were placing two or more labels on locations that are juxtaposed can cause a collision of the text labels. While it is possible to drag the text label around to the other side of the marker, it can become poorly aligned to the marker. With enough text labels on a map, that can become pretty sloppy.
XPression Maps 3.4 introduces a new feature that Aligns the Marker property with the Label Align property to deliver a consistent spacing while keeping the marker position accurate.

The Drawing Tools in XPression Maps allow designers to add icons and labels to a map. However, it can sometimes be confusing to identify which Drawing Tool Object is which. The new Drawing Overview panel presents the Drawing Tools on the current map and shows them in the layer priority they have on the current map. Using The Drawing Overview panel along with the Drawing Editor panel, there are now controls for locating, renaming, locking, and sorting layer priority of all the Drawing Tool objects in the map.

It is now very easy to trace a road in XPression Maps, using a line tool and the Touch Screen Edit (also referred to as auto trace) function on an Open Street Maps scene. Set the Line Area Edit Tool to lock to an OSM style feature and then select a Drawing Tool Line, drag it onto the Map Scene and let XPression Maps do most of the work.

XPression users have been integrating real-time data with their XPression scenes and Take IDs to create data-driven graphics for years. Well, now XPression Maps users can work with the same data sources and get the same information at the same time. This reduces the number of data feeds required and harmonizes the data displayed throughout your facility.

There has been an XPression Maps Data Option to integrate SQL and XML data sources to XPression Maps since 2015. Most users of XPression have found their comfort zone with XPression DataLinq™ as a data source and asked for the ability to not only use it with XPression Maps Data Option, but also find a way to make quick work of things like defining shape styles to geographic regions using data to automate the process. Well, your request has been granted! Watch and learn how easy it can be to convert an entire Map all at once.

As XPression Maps Touch grows into a real-time interactive story telling tool, we needed a way to allow it to communicate with other Ross Video technology in the facility.  In order to do that, we have added RossTalk to XPression Maps Touch. This allows users to trigger XPression, XPression Clips, Carbonite, Acuity, Ultrix, and so many other products which are part of the production. Now it is possible to not only send RossTalk commands to other devices, but there is now a set of RossTalk commands which can be sent to XPression Maps Touch to trigger it. There is a list of commands in the latest XPression Maps Touch User Guide, so read up after you watch this video.
