For users who count on textures from the local file system, rather than adding textures as materials to a project, it has been somewhat cumbersome to manage projects where textures may be replaced with new files during production. XPression now has an option to check in memory cache against the local file system for a newer version of the same file (file name), based on the date stamp of the file.

XPression utilizes a highly efficient compression codec for video files used in XPression. This gives predictable playout performance capability while still providing a high-quality output file for video sources. Ross Video provides a job-based transcoder application with each installation of XPression Studio, Designer, Developer or BlueBox software. While the application is fairly simple, this video covers the basics of converting videos on the local file system of the PC to the XPression Video Codec.

Some designers and rendering programs provide image (.tga, .jpg, .png, etc.) sequences as output files, rather than video animation files. While XPression can work with image sequences, it is far more efficient to convert the image sequences into an XPression video file. The conversion from Image Sequence into XPression Video codec-based video files is very easy. Following this tutorial will show the basic steps from importing the image sequence all the way to outputting the file into XPression or XPression Clips and INcoder.

XPression Studio can work in various broadcast video standards. Setting the XPression unit to the proper video standard will properly configure frame rates and output dimensions for the XPression systems in your facility, regardless of the video standards used in the XPression projects. To get optimal performance, the project should be created in the same video standard as the facility it will be used in. This video will show users how to set a video standard on the hardware.

XPression Sequencer is a powerful tool for playout of scenes in order as well as random order. Most people don’t know that it is possible to save a Sequence and recall it later, when needed. Since the XPression Project saves the current sequence with the project, most users assume that is the only way to handle sequences. However, it is possible to save them and recall them as XML files. This can be very useful for making changes to the sequences within a project that is handed over from another user or location where XPression projects are built.

New in XPression 6.5, it is now possible to export an XPression scene as a video file, at a defined duration and with an Out Transition. Leveraging the XPression Transition Logic feature, XPression scenes may now be exported with an Out Transition and at a specified duration. This allows the XPression designers to provide an exported video file at a requested duration which also has the same Out transition as the graphics played live in production. Editors may now as for a specific duration and still get the full In and Out effects that are done live in production.
