In the previous video Maps 200 we explained how to create Shape Styles in XPression Maps. Now, we want to show you how to use them in the XPression MOS workflow. Once Shape Styles are defined and created for your station, sharing them in the Maps Scene Templates workflow means that the newsroom user can create maps that have a #HighImpact on their storytelling capabilities. Newsroom users can use XPression Maps Shape Styles to illustrate political alignment, regional dominance or simple infographics based on highlighting areas on a map.

XPression Maps has shape files for countries, states, and counties. Adding in every city, voting or school district shape would be overwhelming for rendering and detail tracking. However, if a more granular level of shape file is required for your maps, it is possible to import many of them from government sources.
In this video, watch and learn how to find US Congressional Districts and import them for use on your XPression Maps systems.

XPression Maps is a completely reimagined version of mapping software for video production. Built in information layers to reduce the awkward issues brought up when trying to add labels for countries, states, cities, streets or other Points of Interest (POI) to your maps. Add stylized labels, colors, icons and even custom shapes to maps and brand the whole world as if it was your own. For XPression MOS workflows, Maps Designers can create templates and allow newsroom users to create their own maps, while still protecting your brand. Check out this video and the rest of the XPression Maps videos here on XPression U.

The addition of OpenStreetMaps.org as a provider in XPression Maps 3.0 adds an amazing amount of customization to maps and enables you to develop your own branding on maps. The most basic level of branding is color choices. With XPression Maps 3.0, using Open Street Maps provides access to Map styles which include the ability to set color properties for all the map elements, including the background. AS the base of any map, let’s start here with this video on creating OSM Map Styles.

XPression Maps 3.0 now allows users working with Open Street Maps styles to define the colors for highways, roads, streets, and other traffic elements as well as a highlighted color, to help indicate the subject of the map to the viewers at home. Set up your map branding imagery and define the color palette for your station. Once the Open Street Map Style editor is configured, your maps are all going to be branded which helps your viewers identify maps on your channel.

Open Street Maps (OSM) adds an amazing amount of power and detail to XPression Maps 3.0 and higher. The Information Layer tool is like having hints of places, labels, signs and other points of interest on the map. This not only helps to eliminate improper spelling and positioning of labels, but it also provides detail that other mapping tools might not offer. Used with the OSM Style Editor to define not only fonts and highlights, but also replacement drawing options can allow for some very powerful customization, within the established branding framework of your station.

Newsroom users can also benefit from the Open Street Maps Information Layers. The Information Layers are just “hints” for the user, unless one of the information layer items is double-clicked on, however; they are very powerful tools for identifying points of interest, streets, highways or even neighborhoods on a map and being sure that they are properly used. See how XPression MOS users in the newsroom can benefit from using the Information Layer in their workflow.

XPression Maps added to the XPression MOS workflow can empower the newsroom to create their own Maps to news graphics but preserve the branding framework of the station. XPression Maps Artists will design and manage maps scenes and define the starting point and branding components of the XPression Maps Scenes. The XPression MOS newsroom user will select the maps scene that fits with the story they are telling, and that scene allows them to define the end point which communicates the location of the story.

XPression Maps has always allowed designers to create animated map templates for the XPression MOS users. However, starting with XPression Maps 3.0 and higher, Maps Designers can define the duration of the animation as well as the heads and tails of the map animation. This means that Map animations can now sit on the starting frame for a defined duration and rest on the end frame as well. This can be used to define the playout speed of animated XPression Maps in the XPression MOS workflow.
